uses Thin-Film Transistors (TFT) to control each
pixel individually. |
| |
Auto Adjustment
A function that automatically adjusts the clock,
clock phase (or phase), and screen position of
a ADVAN LCD monitor to their ideal levels under
analog connection. Most of the ADVAN monitor
off Auto Adjustment button on the monitor's front
panel. |
| |
Backlight
Most TFT-LCD displays are illuminated by the use
of separate light sources or backlights that
are built into the unit behind the LCD panel. |
| |
CE Mark
A European regulation that has been in effect since
1 January 1997. It limits EMI (Electromagnetic
Interference) and EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility/Immunity)
and asks for electrical devices to be unaffected
by such fields created by general office electrical
equipment. All current ADVAN products are conformed
to the CE standard. |
| |
Color Temperature
Measured in degrees Kelvin, reference to color
temperature provides a standard for defining
standard colors emitted from displays. |
| |
Contrast
The magnitude of the brightness differences perceivable
on the screen. The amount of difference between
the maximum and the minimum brightness viewed
on display. Contrast = Max Brightness/Min Brightness. |
| |
D-Sub Connector
A connector whose male
end has a "D" shaped
raised shield that protects the connecting pins.
A D-Sub connector is usually a 15-pin or 9-pin
connector with each pin corresponding to a different
wire or signal within the cable. |
| |
DDC
Display Data Channel, used by Plug and Play monitors
is a VESA standard for communication between
a monitor and a video adapter. The monitor can
inform the video card about its properties, such
as maximum resolution. The video card can then
use this information to ensure that the user
is presented with valid options for configuring
the display. |
| |
DDC1 (Display Data Channel 1)
A uni-directional data channel from the display
to the host, continuously transmitting Extended
Display Identification, EDID information. |
| |
DDC2 (Display Data Channel 2)
A bi-directional data channel based on the 12C
protocol. The host can request EDID or VDIF information
over the DDC2 channel. In addition to this, the
DDC2 channel can act as a transparent channel
for ACCESS.bus communication. |
| |
Digital Visual Interface (DVI)
A digital flat panel interface introduced by the
Digital Display Working Group (DDWG). Although
other interfaces have been introduced, DVI is
expected to become the industry standard. |
| |
Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) Connector
A digital connector that accepts DVI signal input
from a computer. Most of ADVAN monitor includes
a DVI-D connector. |
| |
Distortion
A deformation of the video signal which can result
in poor picture quality. Distortion can appear
on the display screen in the form of misconvergence,
pin cushioning, barrel, trapezoidal or parallelagramic
shaped images, poor color, tilt, etc. Most of
times the distortions under LCD are result of
miss match video timing between the monitor A/D
(Analog to Digital) converter and the analog
video output from the video source. It can be
solve my using the Auto Adjustment function. |
| |
Dot Clock/Dot Frequency
The frequency with which dots (or pixels) are illuminated
on the screen; how quickly a single dot can be
produced on the screen. A general formula for
calculating the dot frequency is: D x ~ 1.25
x ~ fH (the number of dots in a line multiplied
by a constant between 1.25 and 1.3 multiplied
by the horizontal scanning frequency). |
| |
Dot pitch
The measurement between each pixel such as the
tiny red, green and blue dots that make up the
screen image. |
| |
DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling)
Power management states set by VESA. |
| |
EPA/ENERGY STAR®
Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
which specifies power usage guidelines for monitors
in power managed states. |
| |
FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
This U.S. commission regulates the radio frequencies
over the air waves. |
| |
Hertz (Hz)
The frequency (number of times) that a periodic
event occurs in one cycle. One hertz equals one
cycle per second. Hertz are used to measure the
Horizontal Scanning Frequency (kHz), Vertical
Scanning Frequency (Hz), and Dot Clock (MHz). |
| |
Image Scaling
A function in most of LCD monitors that expands
resolutions less than the native resolution to
an enlarged mode or a full screen mode. |
| |
Image Smoothing
Image smoothing refines the jagged or blurred text
that often results after scaling a resolution
to an enlarged or full screen mode. Some of ADVAN
LCD monitor offers this special function and
the image smoothing function comes with adjustments
in five gradations so the user can fine tune
the image. |
| |
Kilohertz (kHz)
*see also Hertz
Hertz x ~ 1000: Kilohertz is used when measuring
the horizontal scanning frequency (fH) of the monitor.
An fH of 33.33 kHz means the electron beam can
cross the screen surface and return to the start
of the next line 33,333 times per second. |
| |
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
A Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is a non-emissive
display. The active element is a Twisted-Neumatic
(TN), In Plant Switching (IPS), or Verical Agliment
(VA) liquid crystal. LCDs are used in digital
watches, calculators, word processors, televisions,
and of course computer displays. LCDs offer the
advantages of being lightweight, compact, and
consuming less power compared to more conventional
displays. |
| |
Luminance or Brightness
The quality of the amount of radiating light perceived
to be emitted from the display. This varies from
a minimum for a very dim appearance to a maximum
for a very bright appearance. |
| |
Megahertz (MHz)
1,000,000 x ~ Hertz. Dot Clock is measured in terms
of Megahertz. If the dot clock is 25.2 MHz, this
means 25,200,000 dots can be illuminated every
second. This translates to one dot every nano
second. |
| |
Moiré
*see Distortion
Two types of wavy patterns
that can appear on some monitors. The two types
of moiré are video
moiré and raster moiré. Generally,
moiré appears more pronounced on a light
grey background. |

| |
RealColor™ (Digital
Color Enhancer)
This feature widens
the color spectrum to include YMC (yellow, magnate,
cyan). Some ADVAN monitor offer RealColor™ Color Adjust Function.
The video controller support RealColor™ Color
Adjust Function for natural color. With this
feature the monitor can control Black Level,
Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation, Flesh
Tone in YUV color space in addition to black
level & contrast control in RGB color space.
RealColor™ Flesh tone Adjustment The human
eye is more sensitive to variations of flesh
tones than other colors; for example, the user
may not care if the color of grass is modified
slightly during image capture and/or display.
However, if skin tones are modified by even a
small amount, it is unacceptable. The video controller
features flesh tone adjustment capabilities.
This feature is not based on lookup tables, but
rather a manipulation of YUV-channel parameters.
Flesh tone adjustment is available for all inputs. |
| |
